While plans were being finalized for a day to honor Tennessee’s second winningest football coach, UT Executive Associate Athletic Director for External Operations John Currie bragged to a group of Tennessee employees and supporters about the Lane Kiffin hire. In Orlando with the basketball team on November 25, Currie informed a number of individuals that Kiffin had agreed to become the Vols’ new head coach. This, despite repeated claims of anger at the leak by Currie’s boss, Mike Hamilton.

One attendee at the dinner questioned Currie about the timing of his pronouncement, and whether an official announcement would occur before the final football game against Kentucky. “This season is already a washout,” Currie replied. “You wanted the Bruce Pearl of football and that’s what we’ve got.”
